Mild steel plates and sheets contain predominantly iron and carbon (0.05–0.25%), with minor elements such as manganese, silicon, and phosphorus. This reduces the carbon content for improved ductility, weldability, and machinability. Mild steel is mechanically characterized by shorter tensile strength of 370–500 MPa, yield strength of 250 MPa, and elongation of approximately 20%. It achieves good impact strength and toughness but lower hardness and wear resistance than high-carbon steels have.
